Easy Exercise in the Home

Is it possible to get a challenging strength-training workout at home? Absolutely! Even if you have limited, or no equipment, there are a variety of exercises you can do to build muscle and boost your metabolism.

Safety Concerns

Before you begin weight training, be sure that you don't have any health conditions that make it unsafe for you to perform these types of exercises. It's always a good idea to talk to your physician. In addition, he or she can often provide additional guidance regarding safe weight loss.

Knowing proper form is also essential. You can find a variety of online demos on how to perform exercises correctly. A number of good books show pictures and provide descriptions as well. A personal trainer can also show you the correct way to perform an exercise and provide you with a workout as well!

Warming up prior to working out is necessary to prepare your muscles for the work ahead. Warming up gets your body moving and pumps blood and oxygen into your muscles, which will reduce the chances of injury once you start the strength training exercises. A few minutes stepping in place or any other movement that gets your heart pumping will help you warm up effectively.

No Equipment? No Problem!

There are a number exercises you can do that use your own body weight. Think back to those days in high school when you performed those basic, but effective exercises. Examples are push-ups, which you can do in traditional style, from your knees, or against a wall. Lunges are great for your lower body, and can be done a variety of ways including standing or walking. A low chair or stairs work great for step-ups, where you step up with one foot, follow with the other, and return to the starting position.

If you want to add some resistance, get creative! Soup cans are a great substitute for lightweight dumbbells. They're a little more awkward to hold, but they are quite useful! Wide ranges of strength training exercises can be done with a can of chicken noodle soup (or if you're looking for something more substantial, consider a hefty stew).

You can have an ab work out that you can do at home by doing crunches anywhere that you have enough space to lie down. The further out you place your feet, the harder the crunch will be. In fact, there are so many abdominal exercises that you can do without any special equipment that entire books have been written about them!

With a little imagination and an understanding of some basic exercises, you can create a challenging strength training routine that you can do at home. You don't need fancy equipment to get in a good workout!
